38. The Western Plains. Except in the far north, the part of the great centralplain lying next east of the Rocky mountains has a longgradual slope eastward. In some places, bench lands rise high above the generallevel of the country. Describe the course of the Missouri river. The name of the stream is often writtenMissouri-Mississippi, because the Missouri joins the Mississippilong before the latter reaches the gulf of Mexico. These plains are far inland and receive little rain. Thewesterly winds lose most of their moisture in crossingthe Rocky mountain highland. The northern part of the region includes the frozenplains near the Arctic ocean. See Lesson 40. South of the frozen portion are the wooded plains inCanada. The rainfall there is not heavy, but it has timeto sink into the soil, for the hot season is short and thecold ground dries slowly. Snow lies in the forests forseveral months each year. Large streams flow eastwardfrom this region. In our own country, south of the wooded plains, liethe dry Western plains. Parts of these plains, near themountains, are more than a mile above sea level. From the Rocky mountains many large rivers flow east-ward across the dry plains. These streams run swiftlydown their sandy valleys and carry an immense quantityof land waste.
