English: This image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 5 January 2021, shows the delta of the Atchafalaya River (Louisiana, USA). According to a new study published in the Geophysical Research Letters scientific journal, approximately one-third of all of the major rivers in the United States have changed colour over the past 34 years. Half of these rivers, as for instance the waters of the Atchafalaya River, have become yellow (a sign that waters are heavily laden with sediment), others have become green (an indication of large amounts of algae). Only 8% of the US rivers have remained mostly blue. Although river colour is not necessarily an indicator of a water body’s health, the study noted that some rivers had changed to less natural colours, most likely due to pollution or other dissolved organic matter. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission provides continuous, high-frequency water quality monitoring of coastal waters.

Conditions regarding information to be given by users
  1. When distributing or communicating GMES dedicated data [...] to the public, users shall inform the public of the source of that data and information.
  2. Users shall make sure not to convey the impression to the public that the user’s activities are officially endorsed by the Union.
  3. Where that data or information has been adapted or modified, the user shall clearly state this.
Absence of warranty

GMES dedicated data and GMES service information are provided to users without any express or implied warranty, including as regards quality and suitability for any purpose.
